This module covers the rationale and importance of involving supportive family or others in the context of elder abuse; working with the older person to identify who within their family and social network can be safely and constructively engaged; explore the options for involving supportive family or others to promote safety for the older person experiencing abuse and how to engage directly with supportive family separately or through a meeting with the older person. A case example will be applied to illustrate these skills and knowledge.

This module covers the concept of intersectionality in the context of elder abuse; how to apply an intersectional lens to provide an inclusive, accessible service; understand the relevance of trauma and principles of trauma-informed practice and how to apply trauma-informed principles in your practice. A case example will be applied to demonstrate the application of these skills.

This module covers the best practice principles for safe and effective engagement with someone using violence towards an older person; the ability to identify violence-supporting attitudes and understand their impact; know how to safely and effectively engage with a person using violence towards an older person and raise awareness of practitioner self-care and best practice in the context of working with people using violence. These skills will be demonstrated through a case example.

This module covers the key principles and practices relevant to working with older people experiencing elder abuse where decision making capacity is an Issue; identify and address challenges to the identification of elder abuse in contexts where decision-making capacity is an issue and to assess the level of risk; raise awareness of the range of practical strategies to responding to risk that respect the will and preferences of older people while offering practicable and appropriate support and understand the role of legal processes in supporting older people experiencing abuse when decision-making capacity is in question.
